History and background

FIPA was established as a society in 1991 to promote and defend freedom of information and privacy rights in Canada.

FIPA is recognized as a leading Canadian institute for research, public education and law reform on public access to information and privacy issues, including identity theft.

FIPA works cooperatively with government, business, and the non-profit sector to advance public awareness of information issues and create a better legal environment for the creation, distribution and management of information in Canada.

FIPA's public education program includes the publication of studies and reports, an interactive website, public workshops, a speakers bureau, and an acclaimed conference series.

Since 1991, FIPA has held 13 successful conferences with an attendance of over 5,000 participants.
